"The Science of Life which explains the guidelines to be followed for making a healthy living is called Ayurveda"
Charaka Samhitha (Treatise on Medicine), Susrutha Samhitha (Treatise on Surgery) and Ashtanga Samgraha (Treatise on General Principles) are considered as the three main treatises of Ayurveda. Some of these were written between the ninth and sixteenth centuries BC, including the Sharangadhara Samhita (Treatise on Ayurvedic Recipes), Bhavaprakasha (History and Classifications), Madhava Nidana (Treatise on Diagnosis) and so on.
The supporters of Ayurveda assert that every living thing and not, has five basic elements (Pancha Maha Bhoothas): Earth, Water, Fire, Air and other that manifest with their external appearance, like Vatha, Pitha and Kabha (or the Tridoshas ).
Air and other forms make up the main Vatha, the Fire the main Pitha and the Earth and the main Acquail Kapha. Each human being then has his Prakruti (Constitutional Nature) determined by the various dominations of the Vatha, Pitha or Kabha or their combinations. Harmony in Prakruthi indicates good health.
The cause of a disorder is diagnosed and treatments are prescribed following the directions given by Tridoshas, Dhatus (the one that supports vital functions), from Malas (the metabolic bi-product formed in the body), Agni (which is responsible for metablism ) and from the patient's Prakruti. The result of Ayurvedic treatment is mental health, relaxation of the mind in an invigorated body.
